Getting Started
YucDu is designed so you can open it and start reading right away. This chapter helps you get up and running fast.
No Sign-Up or Login Needed
YucDu is a read-only reader: you don't need to create an account or log in to browse every article, save favorites, search, or read offline. There are no comments or posting features either — just pure, uninterrupted reading.
Meet the Five Tabs
When you open the app, five tabs sit along the bottom, ready to switch between at any time:
- Home — Featured and latest articles; scroll down and more load automatically.
- Categories — Browse articles by topic and see popular tags.
- Search — Find articles by keyword.
- Favorites — Every article you've hearted lives here.
- Settings — Adjust language, appearance, and your reading experience.
Language
- The app's interface language follows your device automatically, and supports Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, and Vietnamese.
- To switch languages, go to Settings → Appearance → Language. Tapping it opens iOS Settings, where you can set a language just for YucDu or change the language for your whole device.
- Return to the app after switching and the new language takes effect right away.
YucDu doesn't include its own in-app language picker. Instead, it leaves language up to iOS Settings, so your choice stays consistent with your language preferences for your other apps.
Light, Dark, or Automatic
In Settings → Appearance → Appearance Mode, you can choose:
- Light — A warm, washi-inspired off-white background.
- Dark — A calm dark background that's easier on the eyes at night.
- Automatic — Follows your system's light/dark setting (the default).
Changes take effect instantly.
Make Reading Your Own
YucDu offers plenty of appearance customization, all gathered in Settings → Appearance:
- Accent Color: Six Japanese-inspired tones (Vermilion, Navy, Ink Black, Matcha, Sakura, and Golden Tea).
- Display Style: Choose one of three — A Minimal, B Magazine, or C Modern Card.
- Text Size: Small, Medium, or Large.
For full details, see Appearance and Reading Experience.
Keep Reading Without Interruption
- Favorites: When you find an article you love, tap the heart to save it — synced across your devices through your iCloud.
- Offline reading: Articles you've read are saved automatically, so you can reopen them later without a connection.
- Notifications: Once you allow notifications, you'll get an alert the moment a new article is published (see Notifications).
